Log in to ACE/AESDirect at Customs & Border Protection.
After logging in select Exporter from the Account Type dropwdown and hit the Go button. Then click the Submit AESDirect Filings link.
Create Shipment from template (use button “Create From Template”)
Mode of Transport (MOT): Most services require this to be “AIR”. However, when shipping through regular mail (USPS/EMS), then select “MAIL” here. Leave the Carrier SCAC/IATA and Conveyance Name/Carrier Name fields blank.
The default Shipment template should populate the Parties screen with some default values.

If these are empty, you can load them from Profile by clicking the “Load from Profile” link.
Add commodities, one type per line item. For example:

NOTE: For packages forwarded on by a freight forwarder (eg. via JAS), file with ACE before shipping (as a draft or expected destination date), then edit ACE filing later (details such as shipping date) when forwarder calls for ITN number.

The AESDirect system will email the shipping department with the AES ITN number (formatted X20170101999999
). Copy and paste this number into the required AES Citation field on the Customs screen in the shipping system (eg. FedEx Shipper).
